Endometriosis: Possible Cause Of Infertility In 30-40 Percent Of Women
In the UAE 7to 10 women suffer endometriosis and it is thirst most common cause of hospitalisation among the age group 15-50 years, said Nadia Al Sawalhi, head of obstetrics and gynecology at Latifa Hospital. Moreover, the disease is known to cause infertility in 30 to 40 percent of the women with the disease. These are shocking numbers, yet the disease largely remains unknown and often undiagnosed. Endometriosis is a chronic disease, where cells from the lining of the uterus flourish outside the uterine cavity. This subsequently cause pain, adhesions and possible infertility, said Gassan, a Consultant in Gynecological and laparoscopic surgery of Latifa Hospital. Symptoms of endometriosis include different types of pain in the lower back and abdomen during the menstrual cycle, nausea, migraines or severe fatigue. Having endometriosis does not automatically that you will never have children. However, it does mean that you will have problems in getting pregnant, and it has been seen that with the severity of the disease the difficulty of getting pregnant rises. The only way to accurately pinpoint the endometriosis, however, is laparoscopy, a surgical procedure that gives insight in the abdomen.
