Suman Bodani, hailing from Sindh’s Shahdadkot district, was declared eligible for the post after passing her judicial officers’ examination with flying colours – securing 54th position on the merit list, Express News reported on Monday. Speaking to a foreign news outlet, Bodani said she belonged to an underdeveloped rural area of Sindh, where she witnessed poor struggling to cope with various challenges life throws at them. “They cannot even afford to lodge cases, and that is the reason behind my decision of joining law [studies] so I can bring justice to them,” she was quoted as saying. fter completing her intermediate from her native town Shahdadkot, Bodani persuaded law and acquired Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Hyderabad and Master of Laws (LLM) from Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) in Karachi. President Trump Took Rare Step Of Attacking Fox News

Trump has slammed two reporters from his favorite outlet, Fox News, for having 'even less understanding’ of the fight over his border wall than ‘Fake News CNN and NBC!’ The President ripped into White House Correspondent John Roberts and Washington Correspondent Gillian Turner in a tweet on Sunday after their segment on the fight for funds during the government shutdown. ‘Never thought I’d say this but I think @johnrobertsFox and @GillianHTurner @FoxNews have even less understanding of the Wall negotiations than the folks at FAKE NEWS CNN & NBC!’ the President tweeted on Sunday. He added: ‘Look to final results! Don’t know how my poll numbers are so good, especially up 19% with Hispanics?’ Trump did not specify which aspects of the commentary by the Fox News correspondents he found problematic. Roberts filled in for Chris Wallace as host on the Fox News Sunday show, which airs live every Sunday afternoon on the over-the-air Fox network. Turner was a panelist on the program, which often invites news makers and talking heads to comment on the latest political developments. Trump's tweet critical of Roberts and Gillian was posted after 8pm Eastern time, which likely means the President watched a taping of the show which is replayed on the Fox News Channel on cable. Trump has been known to call in to his favorite Fox News personalities who are solely on the opinion side of the network, including Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Jeanine Pirro, and the hosts of Fox & Friends. In a follow-up tweet, Trump wrote: ‘After all that I have done for the Military, our great Veterans, Judges (99), Justices (2), Tax & Regulation Cuts, the Economy, Energy, Trade & MUCH MORE, does anybody really think I won’t build the WALL? ‘Done more in first two years than any President! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!’ Roberts is a veteran White House correspondent who covered the beat earlier in his career for CBS News He also worked at CNN before joining the Rupert Murdoch-owned cable channel Fox News in 2011. Roberts has been Fox News' Chief White House correspondent since early 2017. Turner joined Fox News as a contributor in 2014. Before that, she worked in the National Security Council under Presidents Bush and Obama, according to her Twitter bio. Since running for office, Trump has waged a public relations war against news outlets whose reporting he doesn't like - among them CNN, NBC News, and others. Trump and his allies have branded those news organizations as 'fake news' in an attempt to discredit their reporting. It should be noted that Roberts and Turner work on the news-gathering side of the Fox News operation, which is separate from the opinion-commentary department Even Trump's most ardent supporters say that the President 'caved' in agreeing to reopen the government even though he did not receive any funding for his planned border wall. Conservative columnist Ann Coulter called Trump the 'biggest wimp' in the history of the office following his concession on Friday. Coulter, an immigration hawk and early Trump supporter, reacted with swift fury to Trump's announcement on Friday that he would reopen the government for three weeks without any commitment from Congress to fund a southern border wall. 'Good news for George Herbert Walker Bush: As of today, he is no longer the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States,' Coulter wrote on Twitter. Bush, who died in November aged 94, was widely ridiculed in office for going back on his 'read my lips' vow not to raise taxes. Among the hardest core of Trump's base, many had expected the President to push forward with declaring a national emergency in order to build the wall, a proposal he had floated for weeks. Thursday's deal to reopen government came as a shock to this group and a potential blow to Trump's reelection chances. Taking to Twitter, Trump defended his move and insisted that an emergency declaration was still on the table if Democrats in Congress do not cut a deal to fund the border wall before the three-week deadline. I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall. This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!' Trump wrote on Friday night. He continued to battle base backlash on Saturday morning, writing: '21 days goes very quickly. Negotiations with Democrats will start immediately. Will not be easy to make a deal, both parties very dug in. The case for National Security has been greatly enhanced by what has been happening at the Border & through dialogue. We will build the Wall!' In her interview with HBO's Bill Maher on Friday, Coulter said that all of her concerns about Trump would be forgiven if the wall gets built. 'Just keep your promises and I'm right back in your camp,' she said. Otherwise, speculation has circulated that Coulter might mount a primary campaign against Trump. Asked about the possibility by Maher, Coulter joked: 'I'm against women working, so I can't.'

Pakistan Announces E-Visa Facility To Nearly 200 Countries To Revive Tourism

The government announced on Friday that it is easing travel restrictions in the hope of reviving tourism by offering visas on arrival to visitors from 50 countries and electronic visas to 175 nationalities. The reforms, approved by the cabinet, would open up a new era for the tourism industry, which was devastated by terrorist violence after the Sept 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said. “We have mountain tourism, we have beach tourism,” he told reporters in Islamabad, referring to Himalayan peaks and Arabian Sea beaches seldom visited by foreigners. “Pakistan is a heaven for tourists.” the minister did not identify the countries that would benefit from the new rules but in December, he told Reuters that citizens of most European countries would be granted a visa on arrival. Tourists would also be allowed to visit the politically sensitive Himalayan region of Kashmir and other northern areas, which now require special permission. The new rules would also ease travel restrictions on foreign journalists, Fawad Chaudhry said. The new visa regime comes after some countries eased travel advisories on Pakistan in light of improvements in security. Pakistan was last a prominent tourist destination in the 1970s when the “hippie trail” brought Western travellers through the apricot and walnut orchards of the Swat Valley and Kashmir on their way to India and Nepal. Since then, deteriorating security and the imposition of a harsh interpretation of Islamic laws has chipped away at the number of visitors. But security has since improved dramatically in recent years, with terrorist attacks down sharply in the country of 208 million people. The Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation said last year tourist arrivals rose to 1.75 million in 2017, media reported.

Urwa Hocane Is Moving On From Acting

Urwa Hocane is moving on from acting. No, she hasn’t decided to quit showbiz but simply to branch out in the industry and add a few more feathers to her cap. Hocane, who has delivered a reasonable number of hits like Punjab Nahi Jaungi and Na Maloom Afraad 1 and 2, is gearing up for a perch on the producer’s seat with her upcoming film Tich Button. And of course, it stars her better half, Farhan Saeed. Tich Button is special for the famed starlet in many ways. It will be her first project as a producer, yes, but it will also mark Saeed’s much awaited film debut. The Sunno Chanda star will be seen opposite actor Feroze Khan of Khaani fame in the upcoming film. A few days ago, the motion poster of Tich Button was unveiled. Earlier on, there were rumours that the superstar couple was going to share the silver screen in the project together but later on, the team made it clear that Hocane will only produce it. Having said that, it’s still too soon to say if she will appear in a cameo in the film. We started working on this project a year ago. The script is written by Faiza Iftikhar (who has also penned hit serials such as Sheher-e-Zaat and Matae-e-Jan),” the 27-year-old starlet told The Express Tribune. “It was our baby. We just came up with the idea of the story in our home and it just made sense for Farhan to step into the film industry with Tich Button.” The couple, who has previously worked together in Ehteshamuddin’s critically acclaimed Udaari, is collaborating again after a gap of three long years. “Tich Button is a romantic drama,” Hocane continued. “I won’t say it’s a rom-com though as there’s some action in it as well. I think I would call it situational comedy.” When asked about the rest of the cast, she simply said, “I can just reveal that Tich Button will have Farhan and Feroze for now.” We started working on this project a year ago. Could this imply that Tich Button may have as even bigger cast which the team is trying to conceal for now? “I can’t say much about the cast as of now but we share so much love as artists that the support is overwhelming,” Hocane stated. “But all of us are extremely excited for the film, even though it is yet to go on floors.” The Rangreza actor went on share how the transition from acting to becoming a producer has been a very challenging but rewarding experience. “It has been interesting. I’m still learning everyday,” she added. “There is so much I have to know about producing a film and I’m having a blast while getting to know how things work.” Even after years of experience in the industry, Hocane remains humble as ever. When asked what advice she would like to give to her singer-turned-actor husband before he makes his debut with Tich Button, she just laughed and said, ” I think it should be Farhan who should be giving me acting advice! He gained so many praises for his last serial Sunno Chanda. I don’t think he needs any advice.” The release date of Tich Button is yet to be announced.

Punjab Police Encounter Leaves Four Dead Near Sahiwal (Video)

Four people – including two women – were killed in a shady encounter involving Punjab’s counterterrorism police on a highway in the Qadirabad area of Sahiwal district on Saturday noon. The police first identified the victims as “kidnappers” and then as “terrorists of a proscribed group”, raising doubts over the “encounter”. PHOTO COURTESY: TWITTER/ @ZubairNadeem4 LAHORE: Four people – including two women – were killed in a shady encounter involving Punjab’s counterterrorism police on a highway in the Qadirabad area of Sahiwal district on Saturday noon. The police first identified the victims as “kidnappers” and then as “terrorists of a proscribed group”, raising doubts over the “encounter”. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) claimed in a statement that the law enforcers signalled a Suzuki Alto car and a motorcycle to stop near Sahiwal Toll Plaza on GT Road, but they did not pull over and instead opened fire. The police retaliated and four people, including two women, were killed by the “firing of their own accomplices” in the ensuing firefight by, according to the CTD. The victims have been identified as Muhammad Khalil, his wife Nabeela, 13-year-old daughter Areeba and a neighbour. Three children were also recovered from the “trunk of the car”. The children, who were shifted to the DHQ hospital, contradicted the CTD version, saying the fatalities included their parents, elder sister and a family friend named Zeeshan, and that they were travelling from Lahore to Burewala to attend a wedding. “My papa pleaded before the police that there was no weapon in the car and that the police could search the vehicle,” one of the children, Muhammad Umar Khalil, said. “They didn’t listen to my papa and opened fire.” TV channels reported Umar as saying: “My papa told the police officials to take their money and let them go, but they [police officials] did not listen and opened fire.” The CTD claimed to have recovered “suicide jackets, hand grenades and a rifle from the scene”. Eyewitnesses; however, endorsed the children’s version, saying that the CTD officials opened fire on the car without giving any kind of warning. They added that no weapons or explosives were recovered from them. According to the CTD, the operation was a follow-up of the January 16 raid in Faisalabad and that they were tracing two wanted terrorists Shahid Jabbar and Abdur Rehman who were listed in the ‘red book’. “In the morning, intelligence reports were received that the two terrorists were travelling to Sahiwal with explosive material,” the CTD said in the statement. “The terrorists were travelling with their families to avoid police checking, they claimed. “The terrorists were asked to turn themselves in, but they opened fire. Shahid, Abdur Rehman and another unidentified terrorist fled on a motorcycle under the cover of fire. The police have mounted a manhunt for the fleeing terrorists and expanded the scope of the investigation.” The CTD identified one of the victims of the Sahiwal “encounter” as Zeeshan and stated that Adeel Hafeez was killed in the Faisalabad raid. These terrorists were affiliated with the ultra-extremist Islamic State, also known by its Arabic acronym Da’ish, the CTD claimed in the statement. “This network was involved in the killing of three officials of a sensitive agency in Multan and a police officer in Faisalabad. They were also involved in the killing of American aid worker Warran Weinstein and abduction of former chief minister Yousaf Raza Gillani’s son.”
Moreover, the CTD alleged that these “most dangerous Da’ish terrorists” were also involved in the killing of dozens of innocent citizens. Later, it transpired that the victim, Khalil, along with his family and a friend was travelling to Burewala to attend a family wedding. He was a resident of Chungi Amar Saddhu in Lahore, where he owned a shop. Family, relatives and residents of the neighbourhood staged a protest near Chungi Amar Saddhu against the brutal killings. The protest led to huge traffic snarl-ups on several arteries of the city.
aking notice of the issue, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar ordered the arrest of the CTD officials involved in the Sahiwal incident. “The CTD officials involved in the alleged extra-judicial killing of a family have been taken into custody on the orders of the chief minister,” said Punjab CM’s spokesperson Dr Shahbaz Gill. The Punjab CM rejected the CTD report on the Sahiwal tragedy in which the victims were labelled as terrorists. Buzdar has sought a complete report of the incident from the Punjab inspector general of police. Local Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry expressed deep sorrow over the tragic Sahiwal incident. He said the PTI government was fully determined to introduce police reforms in the country. He further said the PTI had never done politics on such types of tragic incidents and the responsible parties would face strict punishment. The victims belonged to his constituency and were all innocent, he added.

Views Of World Media About Imran Khan (Video)

Rice And Pulses Can Save The World

Coming to dining tables everywhere by 2050 are porridge for breakfast, rice for lunch, a dinner of lentils and vegetables and a single hamburger every few weeks, as a treat. Here is a rundown of the daily meal plan that dozens of health and environment experts are urging the world to adopt in order to sustain a global population of 10 billion by mid-century, while reining in climate change and preventing millions of premature deaths each year. The team behind a landmark food study published Thursday in The Lancet say intake of some foods such as meat and sugar needs to fall by half by 2050 to reduce the global burden posed by the three billion people on Earth who are either over- or under-fed. While richer nations must drastically slash their meat consumption, regions such as South Asia currently experience a dearth of calories and protein from a lack of red meat. Livestock farming is catastrophic for the environment, producing up to 18% of global greenhouse gases and contributing to deforestation and water shortages. Under the new regimen, adults would be limited to 14 grammes of red meat a day and get no more than 30 calories from it. A quarter-pounder burger patty contains roughly 450 calories and North Americans alone consume more than six times the current daily recommended red meat intake of between 50-70 grammes. The diet recommends no more than 29 grammes of daily poultry – around one and a half chicken nuggets – and 13 grammes of eggs, or just 1.5 a week. More wholegrain foods such as barley and brown rice are needed but starchy vegetables like potatoes and cassava are limited to 50 grammes a day. The authors of the report noted that the ideal diet would vary from region to region, stressing that their menu was designed to show how everyone could get their 2,500 daily calories, keep healthy and aid the planet. “Eating less red meat – which is mostly a challenge in changing human behaviour – is crucial,” Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Change Impact Research and one of the authors said. “But something equally dramatic that is less talked about is the reduction in conventional cereal and tubers and the transition to nuts, fruits, vegetables and beans as a principal source of nutrition.” The team said consumption of fruits, vegetables, and legumes such as chickpeas and lentils must increase more than two fold, particularly in poorer nations where more than 800 million people get insufficient calories. Healthy sources of fat such as nuts and seeds receive a boost: You could eat up to 75 grammes a day of peanuts, but would need to cut back on other unsaturated fats such as oily fish on those days. Ultimately the new diet could globally prevent up to 11.6 million premature deaths per year, according to its creators.

What Columist Hassan Nisar Said To Imran Khan (Video)

Health Tips--Though Look Strange But Are Good

Many methods to improve your health are pretty straightforward: to lose weight, eat less and exercise more; to boost your energy, get more sleep; to prevent dehydration, drink more water. Others, however, are totally counterintuitive. The following 12 tips really do work—but they may leave you scratching your head. Drink coffee to have a better nap Drink coffee to have a better nap In a Japanese study that examined how to make the most of a nap, people who took a "coffee nap"—consuming about 200 milligrams of caffeine (the amount in one to two cups of coffee) and then immediately taking a 20-minute rest—felt more alert and performed better on computer tests than those who only took a nap. Why does this work? A 20-minute nap ends just as the caffeine kicks in and clears the brain of a molecule called adenosine, maximizing alertness. "Adenosine is a byproduct of wakefulness and activity," says Allen Towfigh, MD, medical director of New York Neurology & Sleep Medicine. "As adenosine levels increase, we become more fatigued. Napping clears out the adenosine and, when combined with caffeine, an adenosine-blocker, further reduces its effects and amplifies the effects of the nap." For healthy teeth, don't brush after eating For healthy teeth, don't brush after eating Don't brush your teeth immediately after meals and drinks, especially if they were acidic. Acidic foods—citrus fruits, sports drinks, tomatoes, soda (both diet and regular)—can soften tooth enamel "like wet sandstone," says Howard R. Gamble, immediate past president of the Academy of General Dentistry. Brushing your teeth at this stage can speed up acid's effect on your enamel and erode the layer underneath. Gamble suggests waiting 30 to 60 minutes before brushing. To wear a smaller size, gain weight To wear a smaller size, gain weight Muscle weight, that is. If two women both weigh 150 pounds and only one lifts weights, the lifter will more likely fit into a smaller pant size than her sedentary counterpart. Likewise, a 150-pound woman who lifts weights could very well wear the same size as a 140-pound woman who doesn't exercise. The reason: Although a pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle, muscle takes up less space, says Mark Nutting, fitness director of SACO Sport & Fitness in Saco, Maine. "You can get bigger muscles and get smaller overall if you lose the fat," he says. "The bulk so many women fear only occurs if you don't lose fat and develop muscle on top of it." Cut back on calories and add weight to your workout to lose inches. To eat less, eat more To eat less, eat more Grabbing a 100-calorie snack pack of cookies or pretzels may seem virtuous, but it's more likely to make you hungrier than if you ate something more substantial, says Amy Goodson, RD, dietitian for Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine. "Eating small amounts of carbohydrates does nothing but spike your blood sugar and leave you wanting more carbs." Goodson recommends choosing a protein such as peanut butter or string cheese with an apple. "They are higher in calories per serving, but the protein and fat helps you get full faster and stay full longer—and you end up eating fewer calories overall," she says. Skip energy drinks when you're tired Skip energy drinks when you're tired Energy drinks contain up to five times more caffeine than coffee, but the boost they provide is fleeting and comes with unpleasant side effects like nervousness, irritability, and rapid heartbeat, says Goodson. Plus, energy drinks often contain high levels of taurine, a central nervous system stimulant, and upwards of 50 grams of sugar per can (that's 13 teaspoons worth!). The sweet stuff spikes blood sugar temporarily, only to crash soon after, leaving you sluggish and foggyheaded—and reaching for another energy drink. Drink water when you're bloated Drink water when you're bloated When you feel bloated, drinking water sounds as if it would only make matters worse, but it can often help, says James Lee, MD, gastroenterologist with St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif. If you're on a high-fiber diet, for instance, then your body needs more water to work more efficiently, says Dr. Lee. "Water mixes with water soluble fiber and makes it into a gel like substance. This affects the motility of the gut and reduces the symptom of bloating." Drinking more water also relieves bloating caused by dehydration. When you're dehydrated, your body clings to the water your body does have, causing you to puff up. Ditch diet soda to lose weight Ditch diet soda to lose weight You should ditch all soda, including diet. Research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health revealed that overweight and obese adults who drank diet beverages ate more calories from food than those who drank regular soda. Additionally, a University of Texas study found that diet soda drinkers had a 70% greater increase in waist circumference than non-drinkers over the course of about 10 years. "In addition, many people think 'low-fat,' 'low-sugar,' or 'light' means fewer calories, but that's not always true," says Goodson. "Typically when manufacturers cut something out and the end result tastes just as good, they've added something like additional sugar." Drink a hot beverage to cool off  Drink a hot beverage to cool off Which will cool you off faster on a steamy summer morning: iced coffee or hot? Two recent studies say the latter—and so do other cultures where drinking hot tea in hot weather is the norm, like in India. When you sip a hot beverage, your body senses the change in temperature and increases your sweat production. Then, as the sweat evaporates from your skin, you cool off naturally. Exercise when you're tired Exercise when you're tired After a long, exhausting workday, exercising sounds like the last thing you'd want to do, but getting your sweat on will actually energize you. Fatigue along with mood and depression improved after a single 30-minute moderate intensity exercise session, according to a study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. "Everything we do uses oxygen, so when you exercise it helps you work more efficiently and you don't tire as easily," says Nutting. "You also function better mentally." Handwrite notes to boost your brainpower Handwrite notes to boost your brainpower Typing notes enables you to jot down more material, but you're more likely to remember those notes if you handwrite them, according to research from Indiana University. "To learn something means you have processed it," says Dr. Towfigh. "And when you take handwritten notes you 'process' or learn more information. You begin the learning process as you listen to the lecture." Plus, since you look at the page on which you are writing, you naturally review the material and reinforce the information you've already processed, Dr. Towfigh says. To improve your relationship, spend less time together To improve your relationship, spend less time together Jumping from one social event to another without any time to come up for air could sacrifice the quality of your relationships. Spending time alone allows you to process your thoughts rather than act impulsively and, as a result, you get to know yourself better, says Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD, author of Better Than Perfect: 7 Strategies to Crush Your Inner Critic and Create a Life You Love. "Alone time enables you to be more in touch with yourself and can better give and receive," Lombardo says. "In addition, it reduces stress and anxiety, which could also contribute to relationship strains." Meditate, go for a walk, sit in a café and people watch, or even clean out your closet, she suggests. Ditch antibacterial soap to prevent illness Ditch antibacterial soap to prevent illness Reaching for the soap bottle labeled "antibacterial" won't necessarily reduce your risk of getting sick or passing illness to others—in fact, there is no evidence that antibacterial soaps are more effective than regular ones. What's more, long-term exposure to some ingredients in these products, such as triclosan, may pose health risks like bacterial resistance or hormonal effects, according to a 2013 FDA statement. More research on the effects of triclosan is needed, and in the meantime, the FDA is working toward requiring manufacturers to prove their products are safe for long-term use—and the state of Minnesota has banned triclosan-containing products altogether, which goes into full effect in 2017.

An Indian Soldier Honey Trapped Into Revealing Sensitive Information To A Fake Facebook Account

An Indian soldier was ‘honey trapped’ into revealing sensitive information to a fake ‘Pakistani Facebook account’, CNN reported. Honey trapping is a practice in which an individual uses romantic or sexual attraction to entice another into revealing information. The Indian soldier, Sombir Singh, aged 22, allegedly connected online with who he thought was an Indian army medical officer while stationed at the Pakistan-India border. Singh revealed sensitive information such as troop and tank movements to the fake profile he believed was his paramour. “He was honey-trapped via Facebook from a lady in Pakistan,” claimed Umesh Mishra, additional director general of police (intelligence) for the Rajasthan Police. Officials alleged that the pair shared intimate and sexually explicit messages and photographs. The fake account featured a picture of a woman wearing a green sari under the name ‘Anika Chopra’. Singh received money from ‘Anika’ through his brother’s bank account. He was arrested and could face up to three years in prison under Indian law. “She started getting confidential information about the army in lieu of which he received money,” Mishra said. Last week, India’s belligerent army chief Bipin Rawat claimed the Indian army was facing a wider catfishing campaign. Many have been duped by scams and warnings have been issued to army personnel. “For those people who are not reporting the matter, if it comes to our notice that they have been continuously flouting the rules of social media, the punishment being meted is heavy,” Rawat said Thursday. “We are taking this very seriously and can’t allow the compromise of security through … social media.” The scammers “from across the border” use Bollywood actresses’ names to entice recruits into online relationships, said Rawat, urging troops to be sceptical of such accounts. “I tell my boys, Do you think that your film star wants to become friendly with you?” he said. “But yet people are getting trapped by these names. We have told them, Be careful, don’t go into these things.” Mishra added that the Indian army was monitoring the online activities of soldiers and that this surveillance had raised the red flag in the case of Singh. “We have seized his mobile (phone) and his digital footprints are being investigated,” said Mishra.

Grand Imam Of Egypt's Al-Azhar University Turned In Favour Of Female Student Who Hugged Her Friend (Video)

Egypt’s Al-Azhar university on Monday overturned a decision to expel a female student who was filmed hugging a male colleague, after the country’s top Muslim cleric intervened in her favour. In a video widely circulated earlier this month, a man was seen carrying a bouquet of flowers kneeling before a woman and then hugging her in what was to be a marriage proposal. Al-Azhar decided on Saturday to expel the young woman, but two days later the institution’s grand imam, Ahmed al-Tayeb, urged the disciplinary board to “reconsider the punishment”. Tayeb cited the student’s young age and her educational future, although he said her conduct outside campus was “unacceptable” and unbecoming for “religious and oriental traditions”. Al-Azhar is the most prestigious seat of Sunni Islamic learning in Egypt. Following an urgent meeting on Monday, the disciplinary board scrapped its earlier decision and instead ruled that the student should be prevented for taking the first half of her exams. The reversal came after the student “expressed deep regret for what was done, and pledged to abide by the students ethics and the values of society,” according to a statement. The viral video was not shot at Al-Azhar, but at the Mansoura University in northern Egypt where the man filmed is a student. He was expelled for two years over the footage, university spokesman Hany Helal said, although he can appeal the decision. On Sunday the young man was interviewed by telephone by a prominent television talk show host on channel MBC Masr, and said that he had brought the bouquet of flowers to propose to the woman. “We were supposed to be engaged but after what happened her parents are refusing this completely,” said the young man, a first year law student who was identified only by his first name Mahmoud. Egypt, a predominantly Muslim country, is a largely conservative society. Al-Azhar is touted as standing for Islamic moderation, but critics often accuse the institution of failing to modernise its teachings in order to counter extremism.
