Pakistan Issued Falcon Permits And Risked Its GSP-Plus Status

By issuing the export permits for 43 falcons to the Gulf and Saudi Royal family members, the government put at stake the country's free access to highly lucrative European Market under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP-Plus) facility. The falcons that are being exported are internationally protected, highly rare which are facing extinction threat is the violation of national laws and international commitments related to nature conservation. GSP Plus facility binds the government to strictly observe and implement country's international commitments particularly those relating to nature conservation and environment. According to sources prime minister granted permission for issuing two permits to Fahd Bin Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, governor of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, and each in the name of King Hamad Bin Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, Bahrain, and Sheikh Hamad Bin Muhammad Bin Rasheed Al -Makhtoum, crown Prince of Dubai (UAE) and the members of royal family. The Arab sheikhs are more interested in Saker and peregrine falcons--the migratory species as they use them to hunt the internationally protected houbara bastard that they believe had aphrodisiac qualities. The sheikh again hunt these birds in the Balochistan province and Khushab district of Punjab.
