Supreme Court Odered FIA To Take Action Against Amin Fahim








Deeming the appointment of Ayaz Niazi as Chairman National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) illegal, the Supreme Court of Pakistan Thursday ordered FIA to take action against Federal Minister for Commerce Makhdoom Amin Fahim in the NICL land scam, a Private News channel reported.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry heard the case here Thursday.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said that gone were the days when sovereigns ruled the land sitting in their royal thrones, adding the keepers of power were the people of Pakistan.
During the course of the hearing, Director FIA, Moazzam Jah informed the honourble court that the authority had made nine arrests in this regard but no hearings could take place due to the unavailability of judges.
Jah further informed the court that almost Rs1 billion had been recovered, but Makhdoom Amin Fahim was yet to give Rs40 million.
“Over Rs40 million were transferred to Fahim’s account, which is shared by his son Jaliluz Zaman and wife Rizwana Amin Fahim”, said Jah.
In addition Federal Commerce Secretary, Zafar Mehmood, apprised the Supreme Court that no further clues of corruption were found after an exhaustive forensic audit of the NICL.
An enraged Chief Justice in his remarks said that it was people’s wealth that was plundered and it must be returned to them.
Also the court ordered a probe into the appointment of Ayaz Khan Niazi, who was the chairman of the NICL when the scam was devised. The chief justice observed that Niazi was illegally appointed.
The chief justice ordered that it should be found out why the money was taken and returned.
During the hearing of the suo motu case of NICL scam amounting Rs5.34 billion, the Supreme Court also declared the appointment of Ayaz Niazi as Chairman NICL unlawful.
The Supreme Court also slapped notices on former and current chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, seeking explanation as to why Niazi was named.
The court further ordered details of transactions made under the scam and also why an unlawful summary, signed by Fahim, was sent to Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani for approval.
