The Longest Tunnel In Europe

The mountainous range of Alps is expanded in the middle of Europe, though it gives natural beauty to the countries it extends but it has also made mutual contacts and trade difficult between the European countries. Therefore, it was decided in 1992 a tunnel be constructed under the range of Alps in the depth of 2000 feet and railway line may be laid in the tunnel Though it was a difficult and cumbersome job, but, human courage, determination and intelligence decided to perform the task.
The construction work on tunnel named as Gothard Base was taken up in 1996 and was completed during July 2011. Three thousand tonne heavy special boring machines were made to dig the tunnel. Now the railway line will be laid and it is expected that train will run on the line by 2016.
Gothard Base is a masterpiece of engineering and human courage. It has been made easy to transport trade goods from Germany to Italy. Moreover, it has made the traveling duration from Zürich (Germany) to Milan (Italy) less by one hour. It is 35.4 miles long and has been constructed with the cost of 11 billion dollars.
