Smoking Of Mothers During Pregnancy May Make The Baby Asthematic

It has been reported in a study in Europe that those mothers who smoke during pregnancy babies born to them might have higher risks of asthma than those who do not smoke at all or avoid smoking during pregnancy.
Several studies revealed that second hand smoking made the symptoms of asthma more severe in babies or they might have risks of lung diseases in future. However, the previous studies were mainly carried out on the effects of second hand smoking on unborn babies.
According to the co-author of the study conducted in Stockholm Ana Bridge Storom, though the results have not been confirmed yet, but the study encourages the expecting mothers if they quit smoking as smoking during pregnancy may cause asthma to baby including mis-carriage, decreased weight of the new born and many other complications.
According to the study 735 babies were those whose mothers said they smoke during pregnancy but after the birth of the baby they quited cigarettes, among the babies 7 % of the babies were diagnosed with asthma when they were between 4-6 years of age. Study also revealed that the risk of asthma in the babies increased whose mothers continued smoking during pregnancy. Such babies were found to be having 65 % of asthma risks whose weight was low and parents were also patients of asthma.
The co-author of the study said that this might be due to the chemical constituents in tobacco that affect function of the constitution of lungs. She also said that if it happened directly then it is done in the beginning of the pregnancy. If pregnant mothers smoke during the first three months of the pregnancy then it was enough to affect the baby. So it is better for the mothers desiring pregnancy and baby must quit smoking.
