Sara Bahai-- The Afghanistan's First Ever Female Cab Driver
When Afghan female taxi driver Sara Bahai has male passengers in her cab, she takes the chance to lobby them on women's rights-- she hopes the country's next president will also listen to her. Sara has been driving the streets of Mazar e Sharif city for the last 10 years, during which Afghanistan has experienced huge changes, including limited improvements in the lives of many women after Taliban rule. Now, ahead of Saturday's run-off election, Sara says new president must push ahead with reforms in the face of opposition from Islamists who seeks to reverse gains as the US-led intervention winds down this year. Sara says," Some times I argue with the male passengers all the journey to convince them female driving taxi is not bad or unislamic. Sara who is thought to be the first eve female taxi driver in Afghanistan. "I am not afraid of anyone now" said Sara Bahai, who is 40, and unmarried and took up her job for providing living neccesicities to her two adopted sons and seven children of her sister. "when I got first license after the fall of Taliban every body laughed at me. But working has emboldened me and I want to show women are just meant to marry and have children". Sara said she earns $ 9 a day plying in the city of Mazar e Sharif, a relatively peaceful city in the north of Afghanistan.
