Rawalpindi--The Fourth Biggest City Of Pakistan
The Britishers occupied Rawalpindi in 1849. Finding its location as most important, Lord Dull Hozie, established a permanent garrison of British army in 1851. Afterr wards for the army logistic requirements railways line was launched in the seventh decade of nineteenth century that was inaugurated in 1880. The northern army headquarter was strengthened with this and it became the biggest British military garrison in the sub-continent. Muncipality in Rawalpindi was established in 1867. In 1881, its population on recortd was 40, 611, it was declared as the largest cantonement of the country. It has been revealed recently that English Masters used to conduct experiments of poisnous gason Indian army personnels here. During the Pakistan Movement the poeople of Rawalpindi supported Muslim League. After Independence, Sikhs and Hindus migrated to India while, refugees from India got settled here. Kashmiris and Pakhtoons also started to come to Rawalpindi. Former president Muhammad Ayub Khan declared Rawalpindi inreim capital in 1959, and started building the new capital Islamabad at the most beautiful area of natural scenic beauty, full of green hills and natural fountains. With this Rawalpindi gained more importance within and outside the country. The federal capital offices started shifting from Karachi to Rawalpindi and population of the city increased manifold. Where the city is important with the above references, some political tragedies also took place here. The first prime minister of Pakistan after independence Nawabzada Liaqat Ali Khan was martyred in the company Bagh of Rawalpindi and after him the the park was named Liaqat Bagh. Similarly on December 27, 2007, the former prime minister and PPP chairperson Mohtarama BaNazir was killed on the gate of Liaqat Bagh. Z A Bhutto was also hanged in this city by Zia ul Haq the then president. Raja Bazaar is the oldest market place of Rawalpindi. Moti Bazzar is nearby where females go for shopping. Sadar of Raalpindi has big shopping plazas and vast beautiful roads increase the beauty of the city. The tourists or all the people going to Islamabad pass through Rawalpindi. Murree road is the central highway linking the twin cities.
