Would Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Turn Into One State?
The king of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Shah Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz has proposed the 5 states included in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to unit in a unity. Addressing the inaugural session of the extra ordinary summit of the heads of GCC in the capital Riyadh Shah Abdullah said they should take step ahead to be united rather than only mutual cooperation. He said we will have to admit the facts that our stability and security was endangered. Referring to the alarming situations in the Arabian countries he stressed the need to adopt new strategy. He said that there was no doubt that the security of Saudi Kingdom and its neighboring Arab countries was targeted. Therefore, we will have to fulfill our responsibilities in the prevailing situation.
The Arab countries included in the GCC, Qatar, Bahrain and United Arab Emirates, welcomed the proposal of merger from Shah Abdullah. Consisting of 5 Arabian countries Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait,Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates the council was constituted on May 26, 1981, afterward, Iraq was given associate membership but it was expelled in 1991 after attacking Kuwait. Jordon and Morocco have also applied for membership and in May 2011 the members of the council showed positive response on their request. Both the countries have been assigned some targets and after achieving those they will be given the regular status of membership It is also said about Yemen that by 2016 it also be included in the council. Though Yemen is not a gulf state but its culture and history resembles gulf states. However, Yemen is associate member now.
The objectives formulated at the time of constitution of the Gulf Cooperation Council are as under:-
*--- Commerce, trade, customs, tourism, legislation and administrative sectors will be harmonized.
*--- Joint efforts will be done for the promotion of industry, mining, agriculture, water, and live-stock resources.
*--- Establishment of Scientific Research Centers.
*--- Establishment of joint military force. Last year when uprising and protests started in the Arabian countries, Bahrain was also affected. Saudi Arabia and Arab Emirates sent joint army in March 2011 to Bahrain that controlled the protests. It is now thought that the step taken by both the countries would lead to fulfill the dream of establishing a joint force.
*--- The promotion of harmony between the allies.
*--- During 2010, a joint currency target was also fixed and the name was "Khaleeji". Earlier Dinar was proposed but it is already existing in the Artab world. The historical back ground of Dinar is linked to the age of Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (PBUH). The word dinar is also narrated in the holy book Quran Majeed.
In the beginning announcement about establishment of central bank in Saudi Arabia was also made but United Arab Emirates did not accept it ans said the bank should be in UAE.
