An Extra-Ordinary Achievement Of Brazilians
Brazil is also facing the shortage of electricity as in Pakistan. Specially the central city Rio De Janeiro has usually break down of power. During 2007, Brazilian government realized that in the city during 2014 World Football Cup and in 2016 Olympics are to be held and it will be shameful on their part if on the eve of international events light break down occurred. Therefore, same year the work on a dam "Simplicio Hydroelectric Complex" was initiated so that full supply of the electricity to Rio De Janeiro could be maintained. This project is an exemplary masterpiece of human courage, intelligence and hard work.
This dam was to be constructed on river Parpia but it was known that with the construction of the dam on the proposed site the nearby city Saposia having population of 0.125 million people will be flooded. Then , it was decided to construct the dam 16 miles away from the city and and the river water be brought to the dam through tunnels and spillways. Thus the construction work was started within 16 miles area and it became the the world's largest construction zone.
Seven tunnels were constructed revolving around seven mountains and every tunnel is 180 feet wide being the vastest tunnels in the world.even hundred and fifty billion gallons water will be brought from the river annually to the dam through seven tunnels and 6 spillways. The turbines installed in the dam will generate 337 mega watts electricity annually. Look at the enthusiasm of Brazilians if one has the determination to do the task the impossible works can be turned possible.
It is noteworthy that Brazil has also the wealth of natural resources like Pakistan in the form of rivers and they are taking full advantage of natural wealth. Brazilians have constructed 663 dams on rivers that generate 87 thousand megawatt electricity which is 77 % of total electricity generation in Brazil. Whereas we have only 5 dams and can get 6355 megawatt electricity from them. While experts say constructing more dams on river can generate 40 thousand megawatt electricity in Pakistan.
