Military Takes Over Powers In Egypt And Morsi Is Ousted
The head of the army in Egypt said in a TV address that sonstitution had been suspended, president Muhammad Morsi was no longer in power and the chief justice of constitutional court will take on Mr Morsi's powers. General Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi said " Morsi had failed to meet the demands of the people." Mr Morsi and at least two leaders of his Muslim Brotherhood's political wing had been held in detention. Anti-Morsi protesters in Cairo gave a huge cheer in rtesponse to Gen Sisi's speech. However, US president Obama said he was "Deeply concerned" by the latest turn of the events and called for a swift return to civil rule. The army's move to depose the president follows the four day mass street demonstrations against Mr Morsi--Egypt's first freely elected president- and an ultimatum issued by the army which expired on Wednesday afternoon. TV stations belonging to MR Morsi's Muslim brotherhood went off air at the end of the speech and the state news agency Mena said managers of movement's Misr 25 channel had been asrrested. Security forces were also reported to have raided Cairo offices of Al-Jazeera's Egyptian television channel Mubasher Misr, arresting several workers.
