Ibtihaj, The First US Athlete To Compete Olymoics In Hijab
Ibtihaj Muhammad, an internationally- ranked saber fencer, qualified for 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio last weekend, making her the first US athlete to compete in the games in hijab. The 30-year-old from New Jersy, won a bronze medal at the women's Saber World Cup in Athens, Greece. The points she earned made it impossible for any other American competitor to undo in her rankings ahead of Olympics. Ibtihaj was started fencing when she was 13-year-old and was introduced to the sport by her family. She credits her mother for supporting her financing and emotionally through her teens. Ibtihaj has collected manny team and individual medals since her World Cup appearance at 23. Furthermore, she accomplished her goal of ranking among top 10 saber fencers in the world this year, currently ranking at number 7. The complete fencing team will be announced officially in April when the qualifying period ends.
