Two Indian Sisters Sentenced To Rape After Brother Ran Off With a Woman Of Higher Caste

One of two sisters, belonging to ' untouchables' were sentenced to be raped by 'Punchayat' after their brother ran off with a married woman belonging to higher caste.

Meenakshi Kumari,23, said how she has been unable to sleep or leave the house for fear of village elders-who sentenced her and her 15 year old sister to rape- sending someone to deliver the punishment. Meenakshi and her little sister were in Delhi for wedding when her neighbour called her not to return to their village as Khap Punchayat, dominated by upper class 'jat' men had ordered the two sisters be raped and paraded naked and their faces blackened as punishment for their brother's action. Their brother Ravi Kumar,25, from the Dalit caste-historically known as 'untouchables' had been in a relationship with a 21-year-old Krishna from Jat caste almost two years. Meenakshi said her brother had ruined his life completely and our family is in danger.
