Facebook And Twitter Are Going To Be Unblocked In Iran
Facebook and Twitter became widely acceible to Iranian users on Monday for the first time since 2009, when the services wre blocked midst of widespread protests against former president Mamood Ahmadinejad, according to reports emeging from the country. Reporters in Tehran for the Washington Post and New York Timers both said on Twitter that they could acess the service freely on Monday. Jillian York, the director for International Freedom of Expression at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said tyhat she had received multiple reports from citizens using several different Iranian internert service providers conferming that the ban appears to have been lifted. "Some other blocked sites are reporting themselves to be unblocked- The National IRanian American Council is reprting themselves unblocked as well" York said. The administration of the new president, the moderate cleric Hassan Rohani, who took office last month, has signaled-on social media- no less, that hewill adopt a much different tack from that of his hardliner predecessor. Marking the Jewsish NMew Year early this month, Roohani and foreignn minister Javed Zarif werote on their Twitter accounts to wish Jews happy Rosh Hashanah.
