Pakistan Military Took The Unprecedented Step To Stop Former Spy Chief Asad Durrani From Leaving The Country
Pakistan military took the unprecedented stepto preventing a former spy chied from leaving the country, after he ignited a storm by co-authoring a book that touches on Pakistan alleged roles in Afghanistan and Kashmir. Retired Lt Gen Asad Durrani, who headed Inter Services Intelligence from 1990 to 1992, was placed on the Exit Control List. Durrani has been mired in the controversy since last week's release of " The Spy Chronicles, Raw, ISI illusion of Peace". He wrote the book with A,S. Dulut, who headed India's Research and Analysis wing Intelligence agency-arch-rivals of ISI. It is based on a series of discussions between the two on various subjects including tense relations with India and Pakistan's alleged interference through proxies in Afghanistan and Kashmir. The book also suggests that the Pakistani authorities may have known about the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden -- an extraordinarily sensitive topic for the military- and may have later handed over the information to the US resulting in 2011 raid. Earlier Monday Durrani was summoned to the military headquarters for allegedly violating the instituition's code of conduct over comments made in the book. A court of inquiry into Durrani's alleged misconduct was announced and he was placed on ECl. marking first instance such controls have been placed on a former spy chief. The controversy came weeks after former prime minister Nawaz Sharif sparked a similar firestorm at home and in India by suggesting Pakistani militants were behind the 2008 attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai. Sharif had calso called on the National Security Council to discuss Durrani's book also.
