Bangladesh May Drop Islam As State's Official Religion
Following a hike in attacks on people of other faiths in the country, Bangladesh may drop Islam as the official religion of the country. Of late, Christians, Hindus, Sufis, Ahmadis and Muslim minority Shias have faced attacks that are believed to be carried out by Islamists. The country's supreme court is currently hearing the arguments in favour of removing Islam as official religion of Bangladesh. While Islam has been the official religion of the country since 1988. It is however not clear whether the move will gain much support in the country where 90 % of the population is Muslim, 8 % are Hindus and 2 % are made up of other minority religions.
