Where Kidneys, Livers And Lungs Are For Sale

Many doctors in the United States receive such Emails reading as follows," My name is Elex, I am 31 years young man from Philippine. I never drank wine, do not smoke cigarette. My blood group is "O" My health is fine. If any of your patient waiting for liver transplantation, I can give some part of my liver for adequate amount of money." Not only this but on Internet fora or many sites have messages like," I am an Indian,I belong to Muradabad , Uttar Pradesh, my blood group is O, I am vegetarian. I can sell my my liver to any American or European for $ 80,000."
The above messages and Emails are actually the part of international illegal and unlawful Organ Trade. According to an United Nation's report, this type of trade is worth $ one billion and in the world the 10- 15 % surgical operations of organ transplantation are based on this illegal trade. The emails and other net messages also show that Internet has an important role in the publicity of this business.
This business got promoted during the last 30-40 years when the transplanting of body organs was made possible. These organs include liver, kidneys, intestines, bone marrow and heart valve are obtained from living human beings while, heart, pancreas, stomach, testes, cornea, hand and skin are taken from dead bodies. This trade got spread due to two main reasons in the world though all the countries constituted laws to check the illegal business but its expansion could not be checked. The first reason is the demand for body organs, because million of people meet their end due to non availability of any part of body they need. If these people are poor even then they can spend whole life's earnings to save own life. The second reason is the poverty. There are millions of people who can hardly get an earning to feed their kids or fill own bellies. These people some times are forced to sell a part of their body to get rid of poverty for some time.

Chief Minister Of An Indian State Resigns On Corruption Allegations

The chief minister of a southern Indian state who is accused of being at the centre of a $3.6 billion mining fraud resigned on Sunday.
B.S. Yeddyurappa, 68, head of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka informed reporters about his resignation in the state capital city, Bangalore. "I have resigned from the chief minister's post as directed by the party's high command after serving the state for over 38 months to the best of my ability," he said.
Earlier this month, a report into corrupt mining practices by the Karnataka state ombudsman named him in the scandal.
Judge Santosh Hegde accused the chief minister of enabling illicit mining of iron ore in the state, which cost the public exchequer 160.8 billion rupees ($3.6 billion) between 2006 and 2010.
Hegde said his probe uncovered "involvement of some 100 mining companies, about 600 officials, powerful politicians including the chief minister".
The report said the federal and state governments lost money due in the form of royalties, central excise duties, value-added taxes and other levies.
The report also said Yeddyurappa's family, including one who is a BJP member of the national parliament, benefited from the fraud.
Yeddyurappa also faces allegations of selling government land at below market value to family members.
The mining graft is the latest in a slew of corruption scandals in India, which is still reeling from the allegedly fraudulent sale of telecom licences in 2008 estimated to have cost the country up to $40 billion.
The ombudsman's explosive findings have cast a shadow on the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has been leading an anti-graft campaign nationally against the Congress-led government of Premier Manmohan Singh.
Resignation of an Indian State Chief Minister is a Lesson For Pakistani Politicians, if they any sympathy for nation.

Use Less Salt And Save Life

According to a study in the USA, taking minimum salt in diets not only can save millions of lives but also save billions of dollars spent on treatments of various diseases.A research conducted in the Stanford University School of Medicine taking 10 % less salt in diet can save millions of lives in the world. Researchers concluded that in the USA only taking low salt foods 0.5 million Americans can be saved from heart attack and $ 32 million would be saved to treat the disease. The low salt target can be achieved by minimizing salt in the precessed foods and various companies have already taken steps in this regard.
During 2008 a National Salt Reduction Program was initiated that was adopted by many companies. During the campaign various targets were set and under this salt was reduced in dozens of foods items. In the United States half of the largest food processing companies have joined this compaign. The first Lady Of The USA Mashall Obama started a campaign under which she asked the big companies to increase the healthy constituents in the processed foods like fiber, fruits, vegetables and vitamins and decrease unhealthy constituents as calories, fats and
others. It is worth mentioning that with taking of low quantity of salts keeps the blood pressure low which is an important factor among heart attack causes. The results of use of reduced salts in foods have great benefits.

CIA's Chief Leaves Pakistan

The CIA's Islamabad station chief, who oversaw the intelligence team that uncovered Osama bin Laden's hideout, has left Pakistan for medical reasons, a US official said.
The CIA declined to comment on the matter. "The chief of station is a respected, senior officer who had the full faith and confidence of folks back in Washington," the US official told the reporter on condition of anonymity.
"Most people will agree the officer's role in one of the greatest intelligence victories of all time means this person was pretty darn effective, no matter what the Pakistanis may think."
American television, citing US and Pakistani officials, said the officer who headed one of the Central Intelligence Agency's most sensitive positions worldwide was not expected to return.
It was the second such departure in seven months from the post.
Despite the quick turnover at the key office, US officials told American TV that it would not hamper US intelligence efforts in Pakistan.

From Poverty To Corruption In India

According to a report the Indian economy will progress by 8 % annually for next 40 years. At present Indian economy is 10 th largest economy of the world. Twenty eight % of the people got rid of line of poverty. It means that now 22 % ( 220 million ) people are living below the line of poverty. But, here Indian government showed cleverness over the issue.
Recently, Indian planning commission had constituted a committee of the economists headed by Prof Suresh Tendulker that defined the line of poverty as, " An Indian who earns Rs 446.68 in villages and Rs 578.80 in cities monthly would not be called poor."
The definition of line of poverty was severely criticized by Indian Media. Because according to the definition who earns Rs 15 a day is not poor is a great joke. In India one sided bus fare in Delhi is Rs 15 and one mango sells for Rs 10. What the value Rs 15 have during this price hike age.Experts say that the poverty line limit be fixed at Rs 5000 a month.
The figures of the people below line of poverty presented by Indian government according to its definition is totally wrong. If Rs 5000 earnings per month of an Indian is assumed then the figures go as high as 500 million who live below poverty line in India.
The growing poverty in India can be estimated from the fact that 50% hungry people of the world live in India. Population rate is increasing tremendously. Every year 17 million children are added to the Indian population. India has internal and external debts to the tune of $ 15.5 billion.Corruption is touching its extreme limits that will make India a Banana Republic.

Pakistanis Love Military More Than Politicians

Majority of the Pakistanis love and like Pakistan army more the politicians. It is the most trusted institution near Pakistanis than any other one in Pakistan. Though its reputation was a bit decreased after the death of Osama Bin Laden. This was indicated in a Poll conducted by Gallop. The poll that was carried out between 9-12 May. It shows that 78 $ of Pakistanis have confidence in military. The percentage fell from 86$ prior to killing of Bin Laden by SEALs on May 02. Gallop said that military was trusted in many countries including the United States. Pakistan had been rules by the army before the present government took power in 2008. "In Pakistan's case, this high confidence likely reflects the military's strong, ongoing presence in civil society and reinforces how relatively weak the civilian government and institutions still are," Gallup said in its analysis of the poll results.
The Abu Dhabi Gallup Center also questioned Pakistanis about their trust in the national government in the May poll. Less than one-third of respondents, 31 percent, said they had confidence in the government, an insignificant uptick from 28 percent in the earlier poll.
Gallup conducted face-to-face interviews with about 1,000 adults between April 25 and May 14. A second poll of 1,000 adults was done May 9-12. The margin of error for both was 4 percentage points.

Human Anti-body That Can Knock Out All Influenza A Viruses

The first human antibody that can knock out all influenza A viruses has been shown effective in lab mice, an exciting step forward in the hunt for a universal vaccine, researchers said Friday.
The broadly neutralizing antibody, called FI6, could help vaccinate people against the flu without scientists struggling to piece together a new cocktail each season to match the often-changing strains.
Antonio Lanzavecchia, lead author of the study published this week in the US journal Science, described the finding as "significant," but noted it may be five years before it can be made into a widely available treatment.
The antibody was found in plasma cells from a human donor. When given to mice heavily dosed with flu viruses, it was able to knock out the illness, offering hope for use as a remedy in people who get infected with the flu.
The discovery was made by using newly patented technology to screen hundreds of thousands of plasma cells in order to isolate the rare ones that produced the antibody.
The antibody was tested in all 16 subtypes of A flu viruses and consistently worked against the often-changing hemagglutinin (HA), the protein that is on the virus's surface.
Mice and ferrets recovered from what would have otherwise been a lethal dose of flu virus when they were given the antibody within two days of infection.
Flu pandemics are unpredictable, and millions of people around the world are infected annually with seasonal flu varieties that can be lethal for those with weak immune systems, including children, the elderly and pregnant women.
The spread of A(H1N1), or "swine flu," killed at least 18,449 people and affected some 214 countries and territories after it was uncovered in Mexico and the United States in April 2009.
The World Health Organization declared a pandemic on June 11, 2009. The event was formally over on August 10, 2010.

Indian Civil Society In Modern Age

Civil society is an alliance of the NGO's and individuals that protect the rights of citizens and highlight their wishes. He succeeded several times in uniting people and their organizations against the dictatorial and unwanted policies of British government. He continued his activities even after freedom. He went on hunger strike when Indian government hesitated in handing over assets to Pakistan. Indian government was forced to give Pakistan the assets.
The first activity of the members of civil society during modern era was seen when incident of Bombay blasts occurred in 2008. They severely criticized the government for its in illegibility, mismanagement and carelessness.
The civil society movement got strength against corruption when a social worker of Maharashtra Ana Hazari started hunger strike. He calls himself the follower of Gandhi. He demanded that government should approve the bill for the constitution of Ombudsman cell. He also demanded that the ombudsman's office must be so powerful that it can investigate against prime minister and judges against any corruption allegation. Many poor and rich people joined the civil society movement due to Hazari's hinger strike. They had been fed up with giving briberies on each step for their legal tasks.
The new generations was more inspired by Ana's steps and they not only protested in big cities like Bombay, Bung lore, Delhi, Ahmadabad and Chunaiy but they wrote on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook in favor of Ana Hazari.

Seraiki People Will Listen To A Good News This Ramazan---Babar

Senator Babar Awan said Friday that the government would announce good news for Seraiki areas during this Ramzan and this would be a momentous event in the history of Pakistan.
Speaking to the media Awan added that the current government would implement orders of the Supreme Court and would complete its five year tenure.
Though Babar Awan did not speak out the actual good news but it seems that government is going to announce constitution of a Seaiki province. What would be the actual borders of the province, what would be the status of Dera Ismail Khan where Seraiki language is mainly spoken and it is the southern most district of Khyber Pakhtoon Kha. What would be the fate of Hazara Province and the people. They no more want to remain with KPK? The hastily done decision may lead to chaos in other provinces. Government must not make it a slogan to win the next election. I myself belong to Seraiki belt and KPK but I do not favor to divide country linguistically. Neither the previous decision of changing the name of NWFP to KPK was correct not now making a Seraiki province is right. Government think tank must think positively and constructively. The strength of any nation is in unity not in diving the nation.

All the positive and constructive activities of the Indian Supreme Court are narrated here so that our Pakistani higher authorities may get lesson from an enemy country. I do not love India, I LOVE MY BELOVED SACRED PAKISTAN ONLY. INDIA IS OUR ENEMY FROM DAY 1 AND WILL BE ENEMY FOR EVER. LONG LIVE PAKISTAN. BUT THEIR SYSTEM IS BETTER THAN OURS. OUR COURTS ARE DOING THE SAME AS DO INDIA'S BUT RULERS ARE NOT DOING THE SAME AS INDIAN RULERS DO.

Parnell Embraces Islam

Wayne Parnell, the South Africa left-arm seamer, has announced that he has converted to Islam.
Parnell confirmed in a statement on Thursday that he converted to Islamic faith in January this year and is considering to change his name to Waleed, which means 'Newborn Son'.
Parnell confirmed that he will "continue to respect the team's endorsement of alcoholic beverages." South Africa's Test team is sponsored by Castle Lager, a local beer. Hashim Amla, also of Muslim faith, does not wear the beer logo on his playing kit after making a special arrangement with CSA because of his religious beliefs.
Proteas team manager Mohamed Moosajee, himself a Muslim, said Parnell's Muslim teammates Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir had not influenced his decision to convert from Christianity.
Supporting Moosajee's denial of influence by Amla, the players said he had never attempted to convert them to his religion, although they had all been very impressed by the discipline and strict adherence that Amla showed to his religion, by refusing to participate in celebrations with them that involved liquor, staying steadfast in his daily prayers even while on tour, and refusing to wear the kit sponsored by South African beer brand Castle Lager.

Indian Upper Corrupt Class Is Annoyed With The Decisions Of Apex Court

Experts believe that politicians, government officials and industrialists are utmost corrupt. They even shunt the civil society who they were to ask them the questions. Politicians used to say they were the representatives of the masses while civil society members were not. Therefore, they had no right to investigate them.Due to weakness of the government, the faulty governance and the failure of the government to curb the corruption, the supreme court was forced to interrupt the official affairs of the government to control and solve the corruption menace found in every walk of life.
Some experts are of the view that apex court is playing an important role as a guard of the nation. The intellectuals favoring courts active role say that court review the the actions taken by government in the light of the law and constitution and if they find the government steps confronting the constitution they can make them null and void. They say that a free, independent and active judiciary necessary is essential for a country.

A South African Man Awoke In A Morgue Fridge After 21 Hours

A South African man awoke to find himself in a morgue fridge, nearly a day after his family thought he had died, a health official said.
Health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the man awoke Sunday afternoon, 21 hours after his family called in an undertaker who sent him to the morgue after an asthma attack.
Morgue owner Ayanda Maqolo said he sent his driver to collect the body shortly after the family reported the death. Maqolo said he thought the man was around 80 years old. "When he got there, the driver examined the body, checked his pulse, looked for a heartbeat, but there was nothing," Maqolo told this news agency.
But a day after staff put the body into a locked refrigerated compartment, morgue workers heard someone shouting for help. They thought it was a ghost, the morgue owner said.
"I couldn't believe it!" Maqolo said. "I was also scared. But they are my employees and I had to show them I wasn't scared, so I called the police."
After police arrived, the group entered the morgue together. "I was glad they had their firearms, in case something wanted to fight with us," Maqolo said.
He said the man was pale when they pulled him out. "He asked, 'How did I get here?'" Maqolo said.
The health department said the man was then taken to a nearby hospital for observation and later discharged by doctors who deemed him stable.
Kupelo, the health department spokesman, urged South Africans to call on health officials to confirm that their relatives are really dead.
The man's family was informed that he was alive during a family meeting convened to make funeral arrangements. They're very happy to have him home, Maqolo said.
But Maqolo said he is still trying to recover from the traumatic experience. "I couldn't sleep last night, I had nightmares," he said. "But today I'm much better."

Musharraf's Strong Supporters Are Quiting APML

Despite the fact that Pervez Musharraf had very cordial and encouraging meetings with some US Congressmen and senators and was assured of some support in his mission to return to Pakistan next March, he had to face strong criticism from his own friends and political supporters of his party, the APML.
His close confidant for the last nine years and former chairman of Pakistan Cricket Control Board, Dr Nasim Ashraf, has resigned from all positions and basic membership of the party. He was the top boss of his party in North America with the title of Chief Coordinator of APML in North America. Dr Ashraf had established 11 chapters of APML - eight in USA and three in Canada.
The reasons for his resignation are not known and all efforts to reach Dr Nasim Ashraf failed. He did not respond to phone calls. However, Pervez Musharraf did attend the wedding of Dr Nasim Ashraf's daughter in Virginia on July 22 before he left USA.
Another staunch supporter of Pervez Musharraf since his days in power has also announced his complete dissociation with Musharraf and his party. Arshad Khan, a New Yorker, who held rallies to support Pervez Musharraf till recently, has publicly blamed Musharraf for making wrong decisions, promoting his relatives and those who can organize colorful evenings for him. "We cannot support his objectionable activities and wrong decisions any more. I have been supporting him for too long, even after he had resigned; but now I cannot take his nepotism, faulty decisions and struggle to capture power again," said Arshad Khan of New York's Pak-America Rabita Council. He also pointed out that Pervez Musharaf's public meeting in New York was a total failure as hardly 250 people came to listen to him.
Nasim Ashraf's resignation has caused gloom among APML supporters in New Jersey, Houston and other parts of USA. Imran Siiddiqi, who was made APML coordinator for Canada by Pervez Musharaf last week, however, claims that there is no rift or unrest in his party in Canada and he will do his best to resolve issues through dialogue among members. But sources say that other party chapters in Canada have not accepted Pervez Musharaf's decision to promote Imran Siddiqui from Ontario to the top party post.
Insiders have disclosed that Dr Nasim Ashraf has informed Pervez Musharaf about his plan to quit politics completely. He plans to return to his medical profession after long absence. According to his family sources, Dr Ashraf plans to spend some time with a hospital in Abu Dhabi.

PM's Written Reply Sought By Chief Justice

The Supreme Court has given one day notice to the government to restore Sohail Ahmed as establishment secretary, asking the prime minister to take back the notification making him an OSD.
In a display of never-ending patience with a rebellious government that has repeatedly flouted court orders and have chosen a path of confrontation, the Supreme Court gave it another chance for compliance.
While heading a six-member SC bench hearing Haj corruption case, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took notice of government’s apparent punishment to the former establishment division secretary who was made an officer on special duty (OSD) on Tuesday, the same day he issued a notification restoring FIA officer Hussain Asghar in compliance with the court orders. The Haj scam has brought a bad name to the country and its investigation by Hussain Asghar’s team revealed that senior government officials and other influential persons pocketed huge amounts through corruption in Haj arrangements in 2010. After the transfer of Hussain to the Gilgit Baltistan, the investigations in the scam had come to a stand still.
During the course of proceeding, the chief justice observed the secretary was made an OSD for upholding court orders, adding that the prime minister acted in haste. He directed Attorney General Pakistan (AGP) Maulvi Anwar to make sure that Sohail Ahmed is reinstated. The CJP said, “Don’t try to test our nerve” as he ordered the AGP to personally meet the prime minister along with the certified copies of the court orders, explain him the intrinsic nature of law along with the court observations and submit his reaction in writing today (Thursday).
“There is no doubt that transfers and postings is the domain of the executive authority (prime minister), but it should be used judiciously… The manner in which Mr Sohail has been penalised persuade us to have strong reasons to believe that it was an act designed to frustrate the orders of this court. If any authority makes a departure from any of its provisions, it is likely to lead to chaos in the country which may lead to serious consequences,” the chief justice remarked.
The court observed that it is not just Mr Sohail who has suffered for obeying the lawful orders of the court and if such acts continue, it would send a message to the administration officials that if they comply with SC orders, they will face punishment. This would discourage upright and honest officers. “Therefore, under these circumstances, this court cannot leave such officers at the mercy of the executive to deal with them in a manner they like,” the court added.
The court observed that once a judicial order is passed, it has binding effect on the executive as well as judicial functionaries in light of articles 5 and 190 of the constitution. The CJP said that Sohail Ahmed cannot be penalised on the ground that he issued the notification in violation of the (office) rules.
When the hearing resumed after the break, the AGP informed the court that he could not speak with the prime minister because he was busy in a cabinet meeting, and presented the notification making Sohail Ahmed an OSD.
Earlier, FIA Director General Tehseen Anwar appeared before the court and informed that Hussain Asghar, who had been transferred and posted as Gilgit-Baltistan IGP before his reposting to the FIA on court orders, had not yet reported at the FIA Headquarters. The court admonished DG FIA for his leaving for Karachi without informing the court.
Shaukat Siddiqui, President of LHCBA Rawalpindi Division, said that the government has repeatedly defied court orders, adding that all the lawyers are with the apex court in the cause of curbing corruption. He said if the court orders are not complied by the government, they would come on the roads. The hearing was adjourned till Thursday

"Pak Puts On Its Best Face" -- Remarks Of Indian Newspaper About Khar

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar has created quite a stir in India and has won over the hearts of the Indian media.
"Pak Puts On Its Best Face," noted The Times of India, the biggest-selling English-language daily in India. In a rarity for the Indian media, not known for assessing the dress-sense of previous Pakistani visitors, the Mail Today tabloid devoted extensive space to her choice of outfit as she flew in to New Delhi airport on Tuesday.
"The 34-year-old minister scored full marks on the fashion front when she was spotted at the Delhi airport in a monotone outfit of blue, the color of the season," it said. "Tasteful accessories, Roberto Cavalli sunglasses, over sized Hermes Birkin bag and classic pearl jewelery added a hint of glamor to her look," it added.

Israel Made Weapons Are Being Used In Karachi

Inspector General of Sindh Waji Durrani Wednesday said efforts were being made to resolve the ongoing law and order situation in Karachi and that the weapons being used here were Israel made.
Addressing police Darbar and talking to media here, the IG said that teams comprising members of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP) will visit the troubled parts of the city and restore peace.
He said the weapons recovered from Karachi also include Israel-made arms but added that the list of African elements involved in target killing and gang war in Karachi had not been made available to him.
Wajid Durrani on the occasion dispelled the impression that he had any differences with the Sindh Home Minister. “He is the supreme commander of the force and the police officials will be inducted jointly,” the IG said.
Inspector general has disclosed about the Israeli weapons used in Karachi but did not tell the route through which they are distributed in Karachi. This is no secret but the authorities are so afraid to name the real culprits. It is obvious that American, Israeli and Indian arms are used in Pakistan in every terrorist activity and these come through Afghanistan. Government knows very well but can not bring them to books because they are so influential.

Indian Courts Are Uprooting The Menace Of Corruption

During the last two years a number of corruption scandals of Indian army came to light. The first was that of "Sakna Land Sale Scandal" The Sakna Military station is located in West Bengal. The military land was sold to a private developer by two lieutenant generals on very cheaper rates through receiving commission. Then a scandal of "Auwrash Housing Society" was disclosed.
The government of Maharashtar constructed flats in Auwrash Housing Society for the families of those Indian army officials who were killed in Kargil war. But , flats were alloted to those politicians, high ranking civil and army officers on their influence who had no concerned in the Kargil war. When this scandal was known to the public there was a lot of hue and cry which resulted in the resignation of Chief Minister Ashok Chavan of Maharashtra.
The Advancement Of Court Activities:-
The members of civil society in India hope that due to court activities their social, and economical problems will be solved. The civil bureaucracy will be warned to work honestly and devotedly. But some people are criticizing the most active role of the courts, they say that apex court has has taken the responsibility of running the country which is against the constitution. They say to warn the government to act properly and honestly is correct but if courts are taking the government duties in hand is wrong.they also say that this will create Court dictatorship.
This is exactly the same situation prevailing in Pakistan but with the difference that every decision of the court in India is respected and obeyed where as in Pakistan nothing positive has been done in spite of the court decisions to curb the corruption regarding "NRO" or "SLIC" scandal, and many more

Indian Apex Court Confronting The Army

Court under the public interest litigation ordered the army regarding the verdict of a case on May 12, 2011 to cancel the 100 % seats reserved for the children of armed forces personnels in the Medical College of Delhi Cantonment. But army did not obey the orders. A student Rachit Sharma was not admitted to the medical college because his parents did not belong to armed forces though he was eligible for admission.
Court immediately heard the writ of Sharma and sent a notice to Army chief General Vijay Kumar Singh that why not he should be summoned to the court under contempt of court law. Court also issued remarks in the decision of May 12 verdict that educational institutions have no right to refuse admission to any student on the basis of caste, race, social status or profession if a student is otherwise eligible, it is against the spirit of knowledge and education.
The follow up of Sharma's case was not reported in the press so it means Sharma was admitted, because general Vijay Kumar had to submit reply by May 12. In another decision of the Delhi High Court Indian army was ordered to confer permanent commission status to those women who have been selected in the short service commission. When army did not obey the order it was issued contempt of court notice then army had to obey the orders.

Countdown Begins For London Olympics

The one-year countdown to the 2012 Olympics gets under way here Wednesday with London preparing to showcase itself on a day of festivities to mark the final sprint to the sporting extravaganza.
British diver Tom Daley is to plunge into the waters of the Olympic Park's Aquatics Centre while International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge will make a formal invitation for athletes to participate at the Games.
Rogge will issue his invitation in a televised ceremony at 7:00pm local time while Londoners will be given a first glimpse of how the city will look when key buildings and parts of the city are "dressed" for the Games.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London 2012 organising committee (LOCOG), said preparations for the July 27-August 12 games were firmly on course, noting that construction on most venues had already been completed. "We are fully on track, we are on schedule, and we are within budget with one year to go and I take particular pride in that," Coe told journalists in a conference call for International media on Tuesday. "One year to go is a defining moment in the history of an Olympic Games," Coe said. "Jacques Rogge will in essence be inviting the world to the Games, and we want to be able to show the world that we're getting ready to host them."
The 2012 Olympics will mark the culmination of years of planning which has seen billions of pounds lavished on an array of state-of-the-art sports venues and urban renewal project in east London.
The focal point of the Games is the redevelopment of a 2.5 square kilometre (one square mile) site in east London which will become the Olympic Park.
The complex will include the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, the #95 million Olympic Velodrome, the Aquatics Centre and venues for handball and hockey as well as the athletes village.
As well as the gleaming new facilities, the Games will also seek to exploit some of the British capital's most iconic tourist backdrops together with famous pre-existing sports venues for events across the city.
Tonnes of sand will be deposited on Horse Guards Parade in the heart of Whitehall for the beach volleyball competition while triathletes and distance swimmers will plunge into the waters of the Serpentine in Hyde Park.
Wembley Stadium will host the finals of the Olympic football competition while Wimbledon will host the tennis tournament.
While construction work for the Games has progressed smoothly, organizers have come under fire over the distribution for tickets to the Games, which saw hundreds of thousands of applicants end up empty-handed.
Coe insists however, that the disappointment was unavoidable given the "unprecedented" demand, with around 23 million applications for tickets made by some two million people. "There were 23 million ticket applications by two million people, that's an extraordinary volume, a world record-breaking demand for any sporting event on the planet," Coe said.

US Army Chief Nominee Says Pakistan Should Eliminate Safe Heaven Of Militants

The nominee to be the next chief unformed officer of the US military pledged on Tuesday to press Pakistan to rein in extremists, saying that the war partner falsely considered India to be its top enemy.
General Martin Dempsey, answering questions from senators at his confirmation hearing, said that he would urge Pakistan to eliminate the safe haven enjoyed by militants in its lawless areas bordering Afghanistan.
Dempsey told the Senate Armed Forces Committee that he will "continue to work with Pakistan to reduce the safe haven on the (Pakistan-Afghanistan) border."
"As you know, they persist in the idea that India poses an existential threat to their existence while the terrorists that operate with some impunity in North West Frontier Province and FATA are less of a threat to them, and therefore they allocate their resources accordingly," he said, referring to two parts of Pakistan.
The United States is working to convince Pakistan that extremists in the West are "as great a threat and probably a greater threat to them than any threat that India might pose," he said.
Dempsey, who led troops through insurgency in Iraq, was nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed Admiral Mike Mullen as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Anti-Heroin Vaccine Developed

Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute have created a vaccine that stops the high one get from from heroin. Designed as a therapeutic option for those trying to break their addiction, the vaccine produces antibodies that stop heroin as well as other psychoactive compounds metabolised from heroin from reaching the brain to produce euphoric effects.
Previous efforts to create a clinically viable heroin vaccine have struggled because heroin is metabolized into multiple substances that each produce psychoactive effects. To overcome this problem the researchers, led by the study’s principal investigator, Kim D. Janda, targeted not just the heroin itself, but also the chemical it quickly degrades into, 6-acetylmorphine (6AM), and morphine.
They linked a heroin-like hapten (a small molecule that elicits an immune response only when attached to a large carrier) to a generic carrier protein called keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), and mixed it with Alum, a vaccine additive, to create a vaccine “cocktail.” This mixture slowly degraded in the body, exposing the immune system to different psychoactive metabolites of heroin such as 6AM and morphine. “Critically, the vaccine produces antibodies to a constantly changing drug target,” said G. Neil Stowe, who is first author of the new study. “Such an approach has never before been engaged with drug-of-abuse vaccines.”
